What does the SPF number actually measure?

SPF stands for sun protection factor, and per the FDA's own guidance it measures how much UV energy is required to burn protected skin compared with unprotected skin — not a block of time you're cleared to spend outdoors. When does sunscreen stop working — and does it expire?

A bottle without a printed expiration date should be dated at purchase and discarded after three years. The number is a starting point, not the whole answer

None of this makes the SPF number meaningless — SPF 15 versus SPF 30 is a real, measurable difference, and the FDA's floor of 15 exists for a reason. But past SPF 30, the return on a higher number is small next to what actually determines how protected your skin is: broad-spectrum coverage, a full ounce applied before you leave the house, reapplication every two hours, and a bottle that hasn't spent the season baking on a windowsill. Shop the label for broad spectrum and a number in the 30-to-50 range, then spend the rest of your attention on using it correctly.
