Screen time is linked to shorter and worse sleep in children and teens, but the mechanism is mostly ordinary: screens delay bedtime, and engaging content keeps minds awake. A 2020 systematic review in the journal Pediatrics by researchers at the University of Colorado Boulder, drawing on dozens of studies, found that evening screen use was associated with less sleep, later bedtimes, and poorer sleep quality — with content and timing mattering more than the screen itself. The evidence is strongest for devices in the bedroom.

What did the strongest studies actually find?
Three findings recur. Devices in the bedroom — even switched off — are associated with shorter sleep across multiple studies, which researchers attribute partly to temptation and partly to notifications. Interactive screen use before bed (games, social apps) shows stronger links to poor sleep than passive watching (a show), because arousal, not light alone, does much of the work. And bedtime displacement is the least glamorous and most reliable finding: an hour of scrolling is an hour not sleeping. The Colorado review noted that the blue-light explanation, while real physiologically, has often been oversold relative to these behavioral factors — the review's own stated limit.
What about the light itself?
Light does matter — the question is how much. Studies of blue-light exposure, including work published by sleep researchers at Brown University in 2018, showed that evening screen light suppresses melatonin, the hormone that signals sleep time. But the effect sizes vary widely with brightness, duration, and the individual, and later work has questioned how much ordinary screen brightness shifts sleep timing compared with simply staying up. The honest summary: light is a contributing factor, not the villain of the story.
What do experts actually recommend?
The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends a consistent media plan for each family and a screen-free wind-down before bed, with devices charging outside bedrooms overnight — positions stated in its family media plan guidance, updated through 2024. The AAP sets hour limits by age for total media use, but its sleep advice centers on timing and bedroom habits. The American Academy of Sleep Medicine's 2016 consensus statement similarly recommends turning off screens at least 30 minutes before bedtime and keeping bedrooms media-free. That is what the experts recommend; the studies support the direction.
What can you actually change tonight?
The steps the evidence reaches, in order of impact:
- Move chargers out of the bedroom — the single most consistently supported change.
- Set a screens-off time 30-60 minutes before bed, applied to the household, not just the child.
- Prefer passive, familiar, low-arousal content in the evening if any screen use remains.
- Use platform wind-down features (Apple's Sleep focus, Google Family Link's bedtime) as scaffolding — they help, they do not parent.
- Keep the change consistent on weekends too; sleep timing drifts fast.
What about teens specifically?
Teen biology shifts the picture: adolescent circadian rhythms naturally run later, so a teen who cannot sleep before midnight is not defying anyone — and late-night phone use compounds the shift. Research on adolescent sleep, including the AAP's 2018 policy statement on school start times, treats insufficient teen sleep as partly structural, with screens as one adjustable factor among several. For teens, negotiation beats decree, and the family's call on where to be flexible is genuinely theirs.
What the research does not show
It does not show that any specific amount of screen time causes sleep damage in every child; effects vary, and most studies are observational, as their authors state. It does not support panic framing — the measured effects are real but modest for most families. And it does not yet cover new AI-companion and short-video apps well; those studies are still being run.
